In July I had the honor to be invited as an artist to Zywieckie Suwakowanie. For those of you who are not familiar, this is a week long trombone festival celebrated every year in Zywiec (a beautiful town, in the south of Poland, close to the borders of the Czech Republic and Slovakia). This years’ 13th edition of the festival drew more than 170 trombonists of all ages and levels. During the week there were many diverse events including warm up sessions, concerts, workshops, masterclasses, private lessons, instrument exhibits, jam sessions, etc.

En julio tuve el placer de ser invitado como artista al Zywieckie Suwakowanie. Para aquellos que no estén familiarizados con este evento, es un festival de trombón que se celebra cada año en Zywiec (una localidad preciosa en el sur de Polonia, cerca de la frontera con la República Checa y Eslovaquia). La decimotercera edición de este festival reunió este año a más de 170 trombonistas de todas las edades y niveles. Durante la semana hubo muchos eventos como sesiones de calentamiento, conciertos, lecturas, clases magistrales, clases individuales, exhibición de instrumentos, jam sessions, etc.

The Festival kicked off on the 23rd with a trombone ensemble inaugurational concert in the beautiful courtyard of the Old Castle. Among other pieces we performed a challenging arrangement of the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony!

El festival comenzó el 23 con un concierto inaguracional a cargo del coro de trombones en el bello patio interior del Antiguo Castillo. Entre otras piezas, tocamos un arreglo del primer movimiento de la Quinta Sinfonía de Tchaikovsky. 

On the 24th all the guest artists played a solo concert with piano accompaniment at the new concert hall of the Music School. On the 25th I participated in a workshop regarding the role of the low brass section in orchestral literature, where we demonstrated orchestral excerpts and discussed the different approaches to their performance. Later that night there was a jam session at one of the local pubs. On Thursday the 26th the younger participants performed in concert, and in the evening we played a light music program with the trombone ensemble, once again at the concert hall of the Music School. The next day, the 27th Dante Luciani (Professor of Jazz Trombone at the University of Florida) played a wonderful solo concert with quartet as well as big band.

Todos los artistas invitados tocamos un concierto con piano el día 24 en el auditorio de la Escuela de Música de Zywiec. El día siguiente participé en una lectura sobre el papel de la sección de trombones y tuba en la orquesta, donde trabajamos en extractos orquestales y los diferentes enfoques utilizados a la hora de tocarlos. Más tarde hubo una jam session en uno de los bares del pueblo. Los participantes más jóvenes tocaron un concierto el día 26, y por la noche tocamos un programa de música ligera con el coro de trombones una vez más en el auditorio de la escuela. El día siguiente Dante Luciani (profesor de trombón en el Universidad de Florida, EEUU) tocó un maravilloso concierto como solista acompañado de un cuarteto y big band. 

On the 28th I taught private lessons and played a concert with the festival’s trombone ensemble. That same concert would be repeated the day after in the town square.

El sábado 28 impartí clases individuales y toqué un concierto con el coro de trombones del festival. El mismo concierto fue repetido el día siguiente en la plaza del pueblo.

It was truly a wonderful experience where I came across great playing and met many great people. I would like to thank the festival’s organizers Anna and Maciej Pietraszko for the invitation and congratulate them once more for such a unique festival in Poland. I encourage you all to take part in it next year, I know I will certainly do!
